Barbarian Assault Guide for OSRS

Aug-14-2025 PST

If you're diving into Old School RuneScape's classic minigame, Barbarian Assault (BA), and want to learn every role, tips on gear, and how to breeze through all waves, you're in the right place. After reading this guide, you'll know exactly what to do and what not to do in each role. Who knows? You might even find yourself enjoying the challenge.

Why Play Barbarian Assault?

Barbarian Assault is a team-based PvM minigame where four players each take on distinct roles to defeat waves of Penance monsters, culminating in a showdown with the Penance Queen. It's fast-paced, strategic, and a great way to earn the coveted fighter torso, a piece of armor prized for its excellent strength bonus. Completing level 5 in all roles also fulfills a useful diary requirement.

What You Need: Plugins and Gear

Plugin:

The only essential plugin for smooth gameplay is the BA Miniame plugin available from the RuneLite plugin hub. This handy tool highlights your roles, shows important timers, and makes the whole experience much easier, especially when you're learning.

Gear:

Barbarian Assault is pretty forgiving when it comes to gear. Here's a popular setup that many players use:

· Full Elite Void

· Ranger Helm

· Pegasian Boots

· Imbued Ring of Suffering

· Magic Shortbow (imbued if you can get it, but regular works fine)

· Necklace of Anguish

Don't stress if you don't have elite void — regular void or god d'hide will do just fine. For inventory, you don't need anything, which is pretty convenient!

The Four Roles Explained

There are four roles in Barbarian Assault, and teamwork is essential. Let's break down what each role does:

1. Attacker

Your job as the attacker is straightforward but crucial: kill the Penance Fighters and Rangers.

· When the wave starts, head to the red dispenser and grab your arrows.

· Call out the egg color popping up at the top right of your screen using your attack horn. This helps the collector know which eggs to pick up.

· Focus on killing the Penance Fighters and Rangers using the correct arrow type (highlighted by your plugin).

· Usually, two attackers work simultaneously to clear monsters quickly.

· Once done, you can step aside and let the other roles finish their tasks.

· Repeat this for each wave until the big finale.

2. Defender

Defender is a bit more involved and tactical.

· Grab your food from the blue dispenser as soon as the wave begins.

· Call out the food type you have to inform the healer.

· Drop good food on green tiles and bad food on red tiles on the floor. Good food attracts Penance Runners; bad food repels them.

· Pick up a hammer and two or three logs to repair the spinning saw blades that kill the runners.

· Position yourself on the green tiles to gather runners near the saw blades for easy kills.

· Drop more good food as needed and repeat until the wave is clear.

3. Collector

Collectors are arguably the easiest role, but still vital.

· Call out the attack style (ranged, melee, magic) that the attackers will be using.

· Move left from the spawn and collect only the eggs that match the announced color — picking up the wrong eggs will hurt you and cost points.

· Load eggs into the hopper for cannon use.

· Red eggs explode and do AoE damage, while green eggs poison enemies.

· Stay out of the way and keep gathering eggs efficiently.

4. Healer

Healers keep the team alive and control the Penance Healers.

· Grab your supplies from the green dispenser.

· Call out the food you have to the defender.

· Poison the Penance Healers by using the highlighted food on them.

· Focus on poisoning each healer as they spawn to prevent healing of the Penance creatures.

· You may need to go back for more food during waves.

· Teamwork helps here: teammates can assist with eggs for extra damage.

· This role gets trickier during the final wave, so stay alert.

Wave 10: The Penance Queen

This is where teamwork shines. The infamous Penance Queen appears after wave 10's floor opens up, and the entire team must coordinate to defeat her quickly.

Here's the key strategy acronym to remember: Chad C — Collector, Healer, Attacker, Defender, Collector — the order in which you'll pass around the Omega eggs. Each role has a specific job:

1. Collector: Gather Omega eggs and pass to the healer.

2. Healer: Dunk eggs in the green pools to cleanse them, then pass them to the attacker.

3. Attacker: Spike the eggs with spiked rocks, then pass to the defender.

4. Defender: Dunk the eggs in lava pools, then pass back to the collector.

5. Collector: Load eggs into the cannon hopper and fire at the queen.

Everyone else should be spamming clicks on the cannon interface to maximize damage. Multiple eggs are usually made to ensure the queen gets one-shot — I recommend making 4 to 6 eggs just in case!

Sometimes, teams will switch an extra attacker to healer for this wave so they can heal teammates using a vial from the dispenser, helping keep everyone alive.
